Kami no Hidarite, Akuma no Migite (God's Left Hand, Devil's Right Hand) (2006.07.22)
Horror film directed by Shusuke Kaneko
Director Kaneko Shusuke seems to have a thing for adapting manga for the big screen: the first of his two "Death Note" movies is currently riding high at the top of the box office, with the second set to open in October, and now sandwiched in between is his interpretation of horror maven Umezu Kazuo's "God's Left Hand, Devil's Right Hand" (Kami no Hidarite, Akuma no Migite), which will be released on July 22nd.
"Devilman" director Nasu Hiroyuki was initially lined up to direct, but after his sudden death Kaneko took over and has dedicated the film to his close friend. Incidentally Shibuya Asuka, the leader of the Bishojo 31 idol group who plays the lead role of Izumi, also appeared in Nasu's "Devilman". Other cast members include Kobayashi Tsubasa, Maeda Ai, wee Shimizu Momoko from "Nobody Knows", notorious pedophile fave Saya and "nudoru" Kadena Reon, the always reliable Taguchi Tomorow, and even Umezu himself makes a cameo appearance. The screenplay is by Matsugae Yoshinori, also a producer for the intriguingly-named theater group Gekidan Alottafajina.
The film's story is based on "Kuroi Ehon" (The Black Storybook), the most popular instalment in Umezu's original five-part comic. One night, a young boy named So (Kobayashi), who has often told his older sister Izumi (Shibuya) of his impending death,
suddenly begins bleeding profusely from his neck and is taken to hospital. So has the power to foresee human malevolence in his dreams, and in one of them is a bedridden young girl named Momo (Shimizu) whose only joy in life is the picture book drawn by her father (Taguchi). However, the father's caring countenance conceals the truth behind the pictures he draws, which actually depict young girls that he has viciously murdered. In order to save So from his painful visions, Izumi begins to search for the father in his dreams. Can she solve the riddle and save her brother?
